Located in the heart of Alphabet City sits a pair of neon Cheshire Cat eyes that serve to strike the minds of people passing by with an electric shock of fear. These eyes beckon you into the Karma Gallery, inviting you into the magical world of Alex Da Corte’s latest exhibition, C-A-T Spells Murder.
Night Terror, 2018
For those who don’t know the name Alex Da Corte, you should—he is one of the most innovative artists to come out of Philadelphia. Unlike so many other famous Philly faces, Da Corte still lives—as well as innovates out of—his studio in Philadelphia.
Hot Pie, 2018
His latest exhibition is a neon cavern; Da Corte plays with light, sculpture, and film in this immersive installation, ultimately culminating in the creation of what can only be described as a cartoonish nightmare. Exploring the acronym for FEAR (false evidence appearing real), Da Corte employs the use of neon windows, a giant upside-down cat and an 11-minute horror film to get his message across.
Bad Cat, 2018
Additionally, Da Corte edited a series of 24 spooky essays to accompany the exhibit. Paying a wonderfully creepy homage to R.L. Stine, this is one exhibit not to miss! The cherry on this spooky sundae? It is every Instagram lover’s dream.
