The 90s can always be marked by two things: the world wide web and the cultural zeitgeist, Clueless—think Cher Horowitz barely being able to drive in a head-to-toe Valentino look. An era that both Edgardo Osorio of Aquazzura and Lebanese designer, Racil Chalhoub, grew up in, imprinting a love for what they call "matchimalism"; much so, that it would foster a summer romance told via their latest collaboration: a blend of feminine and modern Dolce Vita dressing for the Instagram era.
Combining elements of stripes, polka dots, and a magnificent vintage floral print, the pair have conceived seven looks and five pairs of shoes which are all meant to be mixed and matched, worn from day to night, making holiday dressing fresh and easy like a summer’s day. We chatted with Osorio to get the scoop on the collaboration.
Please describe the origin of the collaboration. Why did this make sense now?
EDGARDO OSORIO: The idea for this collection started when we were on holiday on a boat trip in Greece and were discussing how much we both loved head-to-toe mixed prints with matching shoes. We call this Matchimalism! We loved the idea of doing a collection of summer-y pieces that were fun, happy and easy to wear on holiday.
Is this your first collaboration with Racil?
EO: Yes, this is the first time we have collaborated together. It was really a dream to work with a close friend and spend time brainstorming and coming up with fun ideas. We like the same things, so it was great to work together and make something we both love.
What is the design process like working with another talented label?
EO: It’s always very rewarding as you come up with new and exciting pieces and you learn from each other. I love working with women, especially when they have such an amazing personal style like Racil.
How long will the collection be available?
EO: The collection will be available until the end of August.
How does Aquazzura x Racil differentiate from its competitors?
EO: It’s a vibrant summer capsule collection of pieces printed in a mix of flowers, stripes and polka dots. The idea was to create fun and sophisticated head-to-toe print looks that were so popular in the 90s and are so hard to find now. All the prints are playful and easy to wear but refined at the same time, perfect for summer parties or for a holiday trip. 939 Madison Ave., 347-328-0080, aquazzura.com
