Naturopathica Founder and CEO Barbara Close on Her New book

By Christina Najjar | November 2, 2018 | Style & Beauty

Barbara Close is a true pioneer in the clean beauty space. She founded Naturopathica many years ago, well before the wellness craze had fully taken hold. Close knew the importance of a well rounded, holistic approach to skin care and beauty well before the rest of the world. In addition to building her brand, Close is an accomplished author. Her new book, The Naturopathica Effect: A Holistic Approach to Skin Care, is a bible for skin care and beauty. We chatted to Close about her inspiration and what beauty means to her.

You've been in the natural beauty industry for a while! As a pioneer, how have you seen the space change in recent years?
BARBARA CLOSE: Helping to lead the conversation around a cleaner, more holistic approach to skin care has been an exciting privilege, since people are now attentive and eager to learn. There’s much more transparency today around ingredients and efficacy, and it’s great to see brands held accountable for both their products and their business ethos. Now, our biggest challenge is to help clients navigate through greenwashing and understand terms like “clean,” “natural,” and “non-toxic,” without the fear-mongering language that’s so off-putting. Skin care should always feel inviting and accessible, not overwhelming.

Tell us about your new book!
B.C: My latest book, The Naturopathica Effect: A Holistic Approach to Skin Care, is meant to be an owner’s manual of skin tips, beauty foods and remedies, including many of my go-to tips and recipes like Beauty Bone Broth, Vitality Bites, Healing Calendula Balm and herbal tinctures.

The Naturopathica Effect is achieved via a holistic approach to wellness, using the principles of Naturopathic medicine to treat the source of an imbalance, not just the symptoms. Readers will discover how clean skin care, smart food choices, herbal remedies and enjoyable wellness rituals can transform now only how you look, but also how you feel.

What's harder - running a brand or writing a book? (or doing it all and making it look easy!)
B.C: My passion is wellness education, which is how Naturopathica came to be. I like to have a balance of both to help feed my creativity. I feel most inspired to formulate new products when I’m learning and writing, and vice versa. The greatest challenge in writing this book was setting aside the time for my creative juices to flow. I tend to feel most inspired when I’m at home or in nature, so it’s important to create the right environment.

What is your favorite product and why?
B.C: I am always eager to add our newer products to my routine. That said, I do have a few tried-and-true standbys. The Oat Cleansing Facial Polish is such a versatile product, acting as a cleanser, exfoliator and treatment mask all in one. Rich in Oat Beta Glucan, Oats not only calm inflammation, they’re also deeply hydrating and restore the skin barrier with moisture and nutrients.

The Calendula Essential Hydrating Cream is also one of my longest love affairs. I first discovered the herb Calendula when I visited French herboristeries with my aunt who lived outside of Paris. Calendula is a wound-healing herb, and one of the most effective ingredients for dry or inflamed skin. In this formula, it’s blended with nourishing Borage Seed Oil to form a rich, golden-colored cream that feels like velvet on your skin.

What does beauty mean to you?
B.C: At Naturopathica, we’ve always believed that beauty is rooted in wellness and define beauty not as a pampering or indulgent experience, but as an expression of living an authentic, healthy, and vibrant life that celebrates one’s own unique beauty and spirit.

Feeling beautiful is no longer about “beauty secrets”—being confident in our own skin comes from making connections between our lifestyle and how we look and feel.
