Easily accessible via Metro-North, Breakneck Ridge is a moderately difficult, scenic hike located in the Hudson Valley. Be sure to bring water with you, and expect crowds on a nice day. 472 Bear Mountain-Beacon Highway, Cold Spring
If you don’t feel like leaving the boroughs, head to Inwood Hill Park, a 196-acre public park in Manhattan that harkens back to NYC’s pre-colonization days. Choose between different trail options, ranging from 1.2-1.7 miles in length, and enjoy the forest and Hudson River views. Payson Ave. &, Seaman Ave, New York
Offering a parking lot and a five to six-mile loop, Bull Hill, or Mount Taurus, is a peak located outside of Cold Spring, New York. The trail is well-marked, so pick your poison and opt for as long of a hike as you’d like. You’ll spend some time beneath tree cover and some time in the sun, so come prepared. 3011 NY-9D, Cold Spring
Anthony’s Nose is a peak that can be accessed via a 2-mile out-and-back hike that is pleasantly challenging. It’s a popular one, so expect to find a busy trail on nice days, with the best months to visit being March through November. This one is dog-friendly, but be sure to have furry friends leashed at all times. 94 S Mountain Pass, Garrison
Not far from Breakneck Ridge is Mount Beacon, the highest peak of Hudson Highlands. The trail up is steep, making the view at the top a rewarding experience, especially with observation platforms offering great angles. If you’re feeling really adventurous, climb the South Mount Beacon fire tower a mile away. 788 Wolcott Ave., Beacon
This long loop is perfect for those looking to spend the day out in the sunshine. Popolopen Torne is also home to the Trail of the Fallen, a site where large rocks have been carried up and placed in memory of lost soldiers. Be sure to be respectful when visiting, and enjoy the excellent views of the Hudson Valley. 283-261 Mine Road, Highland Falls
This wooded trail alongside the Hudson River is easily accessible via the Garrison Metro-North stop and is a great option for those who avoid higher altitudes or families with dogs and/or children. Be sure to stop at Arden Point, a rocky bluff that offers river views. 96 Lower Station Road, Garrison
