Mindfulness is a buzzword of late, but how many people can really define the term, and moreover, inspire it in others? Who better to help guide the next generation than someone who has been practicing yoga for 30 years, and who has made mindfulness a driving force in her own life?
With Follow Your Heart, Cindy Wachter Levine has set out to provide an empowering voice for a younger generation, encouraging a positive way of being. We chatted with Levine about the book, her inspiration, and the message she wants people to take away from it.
What inspired Follow Your Heart?
CINDY WACHTER LEVINE: I was inspired to write Follow Your Heart when I became certified to teach children’s yoga. I really did it as a tool to be a better mom, but started to think about conversations I would have with kids in a class. For me, a great yoga class always relates to the teacher inspiring and resonating with you.
How would you categorize Follow Your Heart? It’s much more than a “children’s book.”
CWL: I would categorize it as “mindful.” It’s definitely much more than a book for tweens to young adults. The quotes relate to anyone of any age. It’s really just the forward and meditations that are geared for a younger audience. I think that generation desperately needs to be more balanced, grounded and comfortable in their own skin, without diversion. I wanted to create something to influence them in a positive and beautiful way.
The book is filled with such beautiful messages, with quotes from Walt Disney to Taylor Swift. Did you create the book with these messages in mind, or did the idea of the book come first?
CWL: The idea of the book came first. The conversation I felt strongly about sharing was one which they would be empowered by. I really wanted to tell our next generation that thoughts create reality and that you can make positive choices to create the life you dream about. I am personally inspired and empowered by so many quotes out there. I thought it would be a great way to connect with them as well.
The layout of the book is very unique. Why was it important for you to create something that is so visually appealing?
CWL: Thank you! That’s what I was aiming for. The first thing I was ever passionate about as a young child was art. I’ve always loved it and really wanted to create something that looked and felt like a coffee table art book. Sophisticated but soft so you’d feel drawn to come back to it time and time again.
If you could describe the book in three words, what would they be?
CWL: Inspiring, uplifting and empowering.
What do you want readers to take away from Follow Your Heart?
CWL: I truly hope the book inspires anyone reading it to follow their heart and stay true to who they were born to be. That’s the path to a deeply happy life! I wasn’t encouraged to do that growing up. I wish I had known what I do now when I was younger. I’ve learned a lot with time and having the courage to live the life you dream of is what it’s all about!
