We caught up with McGregor via email to learn more about his fast-growing whiskey company, what it takes to land a gig in his tightly-run ship, and to what he attributes his fun-loving and hard-fought success.
Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. Let’s start with a fun one: How did you earn the nickname Mr. Whiskey?
In just four years on the market, I have created a whiskey empire with my Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey. It is the finest liquid gold made of golden grain and single malt. We are the fastest-growing Irish whiskey in America.
What’s harder, taking a serious hit or running a whiskey company?
They are in many ways the same mentality. I always start with a plan—whether when addressing an opponent in the octagon or how to grow a business. The secret to success in both is simply hard work, a killer instinct, the ability to adapt and make quick decisions, and holding yourself accountable.
You’re never finished learning, and you can never be complacent with where you are. Success is never final, and neither is failure. Regardless of the outcome, you won't see me quit. You take those lessons and make your decisions based on them—and keep overcoming the obstacles in front of you.

What led to the founding of Proper No. Twelve?
The decision to make my own Irish whiskey brand was a lifelong dream. I’ve always loved Irish whiskey, and I always knew I could create businesses and really preferred that to being the commercial face of someone else’s product. That’s where my entrepreneurial side comes through. I have been part of all the work, the tastings, the sales and distributor calls, meetings, etc.
Proper No. Twelve is who I am. Proper No. Twelve is in my DNA. It is part of my legacy. My vision is for Proper No. Twelve to become an even more iconic global brand and continue to take over the Irish Whiskey market.
What has been the biggest lesson you’ve taken from your time as Chairman of Proper No. Twelve?
Make sure you focus on the consumer and your customers first. Have an amazing team around you that you trust. Never stop, never quit! The work never ends! Always be true to yourself and never accept negativity.
What are you looking for in the perfect—or should we say proper—candidate for this professional partier position? What kind of application is sure to get your attention?
We’re looking for someone who is willing to roll up their sleeves and put in the hard work. That’s how I’ve gotten to where I am today, so I’m looking for someone who has that same grit and fight.
Why open the position up to a public contest of sorts?
This is the most Proper job search in history, and we are looking for the best candidate out there. We wanted to open the search to the best people out there who can spread the good word to the world about my liquid gold.
Have you seen any interesting applications yet?
We’ve seen loads of interesting applications. You all are very creative. I love the energy!

What’s your definition of luxury?
I am luxury in every sense.
What’s your favorite way to celebrate after a successful fight?
With my family, close friends that I grew up with, and a glass of Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey. It is a tradition. We always raise a glass in a proper salute. I also recover with my TIDL recovery spray. It’s how I keep going after a tough fight or practice.
What’s your favorite way to enjoy Proper No. Twelve?
Any time I can raise a glass with my family and close friends is my favorite way to enjoy Proper No. Twelve.
