Founded by one of Forbes 30 Under 30 recipients, Amy Rothstein, DONA is a trendy drink you’ll be sipping all summer long. The brand is behind spice-based beverages that incorporate chai tea and turmeric, as well as its newest creation, Spice Sodas. Sourcing spices from collectives across the world, DONA pays attention to place of origin, growing conditions and end quality. Each spice, delicate herb and pure citrus is tested for flavor profile and body, creating harmony between sweet and spice.
Conventional spices are pre-ground long before they arrive on grocery store shelves, causing them to lose natural oils and flavor. DONA’s brewing process begins in Brooklyn with whole spices that are ground in-house fresh for each small batch and then slowly steeped to build complexity. This ensures the highest level of quality and control. The result is a full-bodied and perfectly balanced drink.
DONA also values sustainability and gives back to the earth what is borrowed; after brewing, the ingredients are composted locally. Inspired by the pink peppercorn used while creating the turmeric concentrate, Rothstein was blown away by how delicious the ingredient was on its own. She knew at that moment that the future of DONA was to bring spices into the spotlight in unique ways.
The Spice Sodas are made without extracts, flavorings or shortcuts. Plus, they are caffeine-free, gluten-free and vegan. Flavors include Pink Peppercorn Lemon, a fragrant cracked pink pepper with tart lemon (think pale pink hues from crushed elderberries, and a pinch of sweetness for a crisp dry finish). This flavor was actually the winner of the 2019 Specialty Coffee Expo for Best New Product.
Turmeric Honeybush flavor is effervescent and perfectly sweet with a complex finish. It’s like an orange soda with sophistication. There’s also Juniper lime, which is seriously refreshing.
Available online and in retailers in NYC and across the country, including The Goods Mart, Dean & Deluca, Union Market and more.
