Magic Returns to the Whitney Shop With New Spellbound Sky Collaboration

By Gary Duff | June 21, 2018 | Culture

Over a tarot card reading at the Whitney Shop at the Whitney Museum, I learned I was a master manifestor—or so I was told by Martin Anguiano, the eccentric co-founder of the LA-based crystal shop Spellbound Sky.

His partner, Mark Phillips, fields questions from me as we walk through their New Age pop-up shop—filled with candles, potions, and exclusive ritual kits for cleansing, imagination, and empowerment—musing about the special purposes of the crystals sold there, now on display at the Whitney Shop. When I point to a dalmatian-colored stone, he explains that it helps those in need of calming their mind. "How about that shimmering one over there?" "Oh, pyrite! Perfect for sparking creativity." I snatch it, along with a few other odd shaped rocks in hope that they might imbue their powers on me.

For a bit of magic in your life, run, don't walk to experience the special 10-day pop-up (closing June 25), which coincides with National Pride Week and several exhibitions currently on view at the Whitney that explore contemporary life and ancient ritual including Between the Waters and Where We Are, as well as 12 Shouts to the Ten Forgotten Heavens—artist Sibyl Kempson’s three-year performance project.
