Being wined and dined is always fun, but how many times can we avoid the bread basket like the plague and pretend to like raw fish to seem more worldly? *eye roll*
And what about all the mind-numbingly boring conversations about career changes and life goals?
If you’re like us and craving a more adventurous date night, we’ve got you covered sis.
We’re back with Lindsey Metselaar of We Met At Acme, who knows how to make the most out of your date night.
Below are Lindsey’s expert recommendations for unique date night activities that will be sure to take you out of your comfort zone!
Comedy Show
We’re huge fans of comedy shows as date spots. If your date doesn’t have a good sense of humor—aka he makes dad jokes at all the wrong times—ditch em. We know that’s harsh, but what your potential partner laughs at reveals all! There are a ton of comedy clubs in the city, but we’re loyal Comedy Cellar goers. Although Comedy Cellar is widely considered the best comedy club in the country, tickets are only 12 dollars a person. If he can’t spend 12 dollars on you, how will you ever expect to get the diamond ring of your dreams?!
Drive-In Movie
Greenpoint Brooklyn’s Skyline Drive-In plays great date-friendly movies with amazing views of Manhattan. There’s nothing more romantic than snuggling up in your car with cozy blankets and buttery movie popcorn. Your date’s movie theatre snack of choice is almost as important as his sense of humor. If you can’t share Peanut m&m’s and Twizzlers, is it even worth dating? Kidding. Kinda.
Picnic In the Park
A picnic in the park may seem straight out of a sappy Drew Barrymore movie, but it’s honestly such a cute date idea. Pro tip: it’s always good to see if you connect in the daylight, before committing to a date after dark. Nighttime dates typically lend themselves to drinking and pressure to go back after. Another Pro Tip: If he's the right guy, he won’t pressure. Better yet, it won’t feel like an obligation—you’ll be equally into it! We’re getting sidetracked here. Pick up a few things from your favorite local market, and make a fun little spread while basking under the sun!
Ice Cream Date
I know everybody is on that paleo, keto, dairy-free kick these days, but Ice Cream dates are always a classic. It’s like going for a meal, without having to suffer through two hours of small talk. You can go to your local late-night ice cream spot, or one of the best shops in the city. We highly recommend Morgensterns, Ample Hills, or Van Leeuwen. Warning: there may be a long line, so have your questions prepared. Just kidding, conversation should flow naturally with Mr. Right, but you get the point.
Cooking Class
Instead of going out to dinner, make your own dinner! A man who doesn’t burn pasta water is seriously attractive. There are tons of cooking classes in the city, but Italian is always a safe bet. With Covid on the rise, it’s probably safest to do a virtual cooking class. Maybe not as exciting as going in person, but it makes going back for dessert *wink* a lot more convenient. Eataly is offering a ton of online pizza-making classes, but they sell out fast. Make your date schedule you in a few weeks in advance—the true test to see if he’s into you—and have a pizza party in your own home!
Mini Golf
If you’re like us and are super unathletic, the thought of mini golf can be daunting. But trust us, there is nothing intimidating about playing a round of fake golf and laughing at your lack of skills. If he readjusts your position by doing that sexy, hold your waist thing *NOT in a creepy way* he’s a winner. There are lots of mini-golf places around Manhattan, but we love Pier 25 at Hudson River Park. It’s right off of the West Side Highway—shoutout Serena Kerrigan—so you can walk around after and watch the sunset.
Concert
If you have the same taste in music, you’re a match made in heaven. Politics and religion matter too *to some* but if you both jam out to Kygo, there’s a great chance you’re in it for the long haul. It’s also super important to see how your potential partner acts in a public space. Does he hold the door for others? Does he help the older women cross the street outside of the venue? Does he know how to handle his six beers, or is he throwing up in the bathroom like a frat bro?
