Swedish Meatballs Recipe by Kitchen Sanctuary

With any kind of weather rain or snow, there's nothing cozier than gathering with your friends and family to enjoy some comfort food. Swedish Meatballs are sure-fire way to please everyone, even better when served with a delicious and creamy sauce.

YouTube chef Nicky Corbishley shared her version of the iconic Swedish meatball with easy-to-follow steps and ingredients you'll find readily available at any local grocery market. Corbishley specializes in delicious, family-friendly meals and shares a plethora of flavorful recipes via her website, Kitchen Sanctuary.

“It is a real hit with the family,” she says, suggesting one serve these mouthwatering meatballs with mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam. She also provides alternatives for the jam- cranberry sauce or redcurrant jam, and you can always swap the mashed potatoes with some classic, hearty pasta.

According to Corbishley, allspice is a vital ingredient to get the classic Swedish taste from your juicy meatballs. Breadcrumbs are also essential when creating your meatball mixture. This ensures your meatballs are tender and soft.

Ingredients:

Meatballs

  • 500 g (1lb)beef mince - ideally 20% fat
  • 250 g (½ lb)pork mince
  • 1 onion - finely chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic - minced
  • 4 tbsp panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 medium egg
  • 5 tbsp (75ml) full-fat milk
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp white pepper
  • ¼ tsp allspice
  • 2 tbsp vegetable or olive oil

Meatball Sauce

  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp plain - all purpose flour
  • 180 ml (¾ cup) beef stock
  • 120 ml (½ cup) vegetable stock
  • 120 ml (½ cup) double (heavy) cream
  • 2 tsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • ¼ tsp salt

Preparation:

Meatballs (Serves 18 to 22 meatballs)

  1. Start with adding 500 grams of beef mince and 250 grams of pork mince in a big bowl.
  2. Add finely diced onion, a minced clove of garlic, four tablespoons of panko breadcrumbs, 1 medium egg, 5 tablespoons of full-fat milk, half a teaspoon of of salt, quarter spoon of white pepper and black pepper each and quarter spoon of allspice.
  3. Mix it all together with your hands until all the ingredients are combined.
  4. Once done, take a piece of the mixture about the size of a golf ball, squeeze it slightly with your hands and roll it together into a meatball shape and place it on the tray. Continue to do this until all your mixture is used.
  5. Now it is time to fry your meatballs! Add a tablespoon of vegetable oil to your frying pan.
  6. Add half your meatballs to the pan and fry. Turn your meatballs occasionally until browned all over.
  7. Once done, transfer the meatballs to a tray and repeat the same frying process with the remaining meatballs and transfer them on to the same tray.
  8. Put the tray of meatballs in the oven and let cook on low (300 F) for about 5 to 6 minutes.

Meatball Sauce

  1. Turn the pan down to medium heat and add 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter to the same pan you cooked your meatballs in.
  2. Once the butter is melted, add 3 tablespoons of all purpose flour and whisk it into the butter.
  3. After this, add 180 ml of beef stock into the pan and stir together with the whisk till there are no lumps.
  4. Add 120 ml of vegetable stock and stir it into the mixture, followed by 120 ml of double or heavy cream.
  5. Then add two teaspoons of soy sauce, a teaspoon of Worcester sauce, a teaspoon of Dijon mustard and quarter a teaspoon of salt.
  6. Stir it all together and bring it to a gentle simmer.
  7. Add the meatballs to the sauce in the pan and make sure all the meatballs are coated with the sauce, and let it cook for 3 to 4 minutes.
  8. Then serve with creamy mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam and garnish it with finely chopped fresh parsley with your favorite green vegetables on the side!
