How long have you been wearing Swarovski?
KARLIE KLOSS: I’ve worn Swarovski my whole career, whether it’s on a couture gown where crystals are being sewn one by one onto beautiful creations, or long before that, growing up in St. Louis, my grandmother would buy my sister and I special pieces from Swarovski every holiday. It’s a brand that’s been in my life in different roles through the years.
What about Swarovski as a brand made you want to partner with them?
KK: They have been incredible partners. We’ve worked together for a number of years now and I’m happy being part of a brand with such a legacy. It’s truly a brand that has best in class product and design and it’s a family business—and a global business. I love the fact the family is so involved and the heritage is such a big part of the history.
Oh, and another thing that’s so interesting is the technology they use. The fact that it’s a science...
Oh right, that’s kind of a thing for you. You love tech!
KK: Yes. I love business. I love technology. I’m always asking questions of the family— everybody works on a different side of the business, so I’m always learning.
What part of the technology really interests you?
KK: Not only how they cut the crystals with the lasers, but on every crystal, there’s a special Swarovski mark. No matter how big or small [the crystal]. There’s so many facets of the business—it’s massive and it’s something that I’m so inspired by because they really touch so many different people’s lives.
What Swarovski item or line are you obsessed with now? Are you wearing one?
KK: I love these statement pieces, such as an earring like this (points to her ear lobes).
Is it one earring or two?
KK: It’s one, it’s connected. It’s so chic. It’s part of the Luminous Fairy collection. They have the fierce ring too and there’s a necklace that’s pretty wow.
Are you an earring, ring, or necklace person?
KK: I honestly love a statement earring for an event when I’m wearing a gown or something more formal. I love to layer pieces too. There’s the Remix collection where you can stack and layer and add the bracelets together. It’s very versatile and easy to personalize. The other line I love is Jason Wu for Atelier Swarovski.
Your social media video for Swarovski, where you’re saying the name over and over again is hilarious, and so authentic. Were you surprised they used that clip?
KK: I mean, you know... that’s the truth! A lot of people don’t want to mess up the name and say it wrong. So I said, I’m going to learn how to properly say it.
You got to work with British Vogue’s Edward Enninful and famous photographer Barnaby Roper on the campaign, which must have been amazing. What did they bring to the project that stuck with you?
KK: Well I admire both of them and their work and I’ve worked with them for a number of years. To work with them on a shoot like this, especially where these images go all around the world... Well, it’s really pretty amazing.
As a model, you know having a billboard in Times Square is a bucket list item for many in your profession. So how is having a store and billboard in Times Square with your face as the ambassador?
KK: New York City is one of personally my favorite places on the planet and Times Square is right in the heart of it. It’s kind of surreal to walk by those billboards and be five stories tall. I mean, I’m six feet tall, but five stories tall is another experience...
