What’s the latest prescription from acclaimed dermatologist Dr. Macrene Alexiades? A fabulous facial—just in time to get your holiday glow going.
As CEO and founder of MACRENE actives, brilliant beauty Dr. Macrene Alexiades holds not one but three Harvard degrees (a BA from Harvard University, an MD from Harvard Medical School, and a Ph.D. in Genetics from Harvard University)—and she certainly knows her science. We checked in with the glow-getter to learn more about results-driven facials (think exfoliation, ultrasonic pore cleanse, signature facial massage and LED light treatment)—and the latest beauty buzz.
What inspired you to open the spa?
As a practicing dermatologist for over 25 years, and Ph.D. scientist who conducted basic science and clinical research FDA trials on every major advance in aesthetic medicine, and has written numerous articles and textbooks in cosmetic dermatologic surgery, I transferred this knowledge into the creation of formulations aimed at replacing cosmetic procedures with MACRENE actives. My line offers the consumer the highest quality and variety of active ingredients of any skincare brand on the market. This motivated me to open my first spa in the Hamptons and in New York City to deliver this efficacy with MACRENE spa treatments with dermatology-grade results.
MACRENE actives’ device and skincare facials pair well with in-office injectables.
Did you feel there was a void in the market for the type of results that you wanted to deliver?
Absolutely! The market had a completely blank horizon when I entered the field! I started in science 40 years ago after reading Rachel Carlson’s Silent Spring and worked from a young age in university laboratories to replace toxic pesticides with plant-derived alternatives. I obtained three Harvard degrees and a Fulbright in bioengineering of agricultural crops before becoming a physician, scientist and dermatologist. As soon as I went into dermatology, I realized that most skincare products were comprised of chemicals and very few ingredients of any worth. I rapidly began to classify skin aging into categories, including wrinkles, laxity, brown spots, broken capillaries, keratoses, and poor texture; countless FDA clinical trials use the Alexiades Skin Aging Classification Grading Scale. Concurrently, I identified and classified active skincare ingredients into classes according to the results they provide, such as peptides, antioxidants, hyaluronic acids, brighteners, barrier restorers etc. I started with my patent on my first hero formula packed with 50 actives and then created a line of products, each with 50 or more actives. Now, I am translating the efficacy of dermatologic procedures such as injectables, lasers and devices, with spa treatments delivering MACRENE actives.
How do you recommend facial treatments as a compliment to some of the in-office treatments?
While twice-daily use of MACRENE actives over time results in cosmetic procedure grade results, some may have started late, fallen behind or simply want a boost. A MACRENE actives facial jump-starts the skin by delivering a dermatologic-grade dose of actives into the skin in a single treatment. The treatments are relaxing, rejuvenating, and restorative, taking the responsibility out of your hands and into ours. After that, you should maintain at home with your MACRENE regimen to continue to turn back the clock to the age of 25 before the skin starts to deteriorate due to exposure to sun, pollution, and age.
Are there certain facials that you think pair well as follow-ups to the in-office treatments?
As a pioneer and developer of lasers, light and radiofrequency technologies in dermatology, I am a big believer that the MACRENE actives device and skincare facials will pair extremely well with in-office injectables to achieve the world’s best skin. My esthetician has access to the most sophisticated aesthetic devices in the industry, and we will continue to pave the way in delivering the best skin with no downtime. As an example of my work, just this year, I have published four first-author papers (a home run!), which fuel my advances with MACRENE actives aesthetic treatments.
