With a mission to curate a collection that's one part sustainable and two parts everyday street wear, fashion designer Nicole Miller is bridging the gap between eco-friendly fashion and infectiously cool ready to wear clothing. And at this year’s New York Fashion Week, Miller presented a Fall 2019 collection that’s in line with everybody's day-to-day schedule with a touch of youthful “fun.”
So we went backstage with Miller, to hear more about what inspired her upcoming fall 2019 collection, her message of sustainability, and how she survives New York Fashion Week each year.
What inspired you to curate your fall 2019 collection?
NICOLE MILLER: It started out being, I was on a sustainable message. But then I moved on from that and it was more about everybody’s balance between having to work and work out and make decisions and be concerned about the world, yet still have fun.
How did you initially jumpstart this message of sustainability?
NM: I started out by redoing cashmere sweaters.
Do you plan on continuing this message in future collections?
NM: I always do. I have my newsletter, which is anti-plastic. I’m always in that frame. I’m always in the office making everyone reuse cups and not use plastic.
In the collection you premiered today, what would you say your favorite pieces were?
NM: I don’t have a favorite piece. I like everything!

What could you tell us about upcoming fall 2019 trends?
NM: I don’t know because I never follow trends. And I feel like I get all of street, but a feminine take on street.
Wardrobe staples. What item in your closet are you currently obsessed with?
NM: I always wear black. I’m not obsessed with anything.
A woman always packs the essentials in her purse. What’s your essential?
And Nicole, give us the insider scoop on how you survive New York Fashion Week each year.
NM: I eat potato chips. This week I had Herr's potato chips. We have a few stores in Pennsylvania and they sent me all these Herr's potato chips and they're really good! They’re one of my favorites.
