Porsche Design celebrates the 40th anniversary of its iconic P'8478 sunglasses with a showstopping limited-edition style.
Porsche Design’s new P’8478 40Y sunglasses celebrate a brand classic.
Even if you’ve never worn Porsche Design’s P’8478 shades, you’ll recognize their unmistakable silhouette. That’s because from the Kardashians and J.Lo to Axl Rose and Eddie Murphy, every paparazzi-dodging megastar worth their salt relies on the German lifestyle brand’s uberchic, oversize shades to create the ultimate look. Porsche Design’s first eyewear style, the P’8478 became an instant classic upon its release in 1978 thanks to sleek titanium frames and ingenious teardrop-shaped polycarbonate lenses that could be replaced to adjust to a variety of lighting conditions, an industry first. “The design of the P’8478 was revolutionary, and it still holds up to this day,” notes Studio F.A. Porsche Design Director Christian Schwamkrug. To celebrate the line’s 40th anniversary, Schwamkrug and his team have revisited the design, and the result is the striking new P’8478 40Y. With a matte black ultralight titanium frame and gray gradient lenses with a stylish gold nose bridge, the 40Y is available in two sizes, each limited to just 1,978 pairs worldwide, making it a must-have addition to any fashionista’s specs collection. Because even after 40 years, the design is as fresh as ever. “Simply put,” says Schwamkrug, “they fit any face and always look great.” $935, porsche-design.us
