Chances are you’ve heard of chef-restaurateur Richard Sandoval, known for his uber-successful restaurants across 10 different countries. Sandoval has teamed up with chef Jonatán Gómez Luna Torres to open his third NYC hotspot, joining Maya and Jalao. The new concept, called tán, is a coastal Tulum-inspired restaurant located in Midtown East at 209 E. 49th Street.
The restaurant is imbued with the vibrant energies of the Yucatán peninsula matched with gorgeous design by award-winning design firm PeterMax Co. Muted earthy tones and textures such as elaborate henequen fiber wall hangings and woven sisal sun screens transport guests form Manhattan to Mexico. The space also features a tucked-away lounge called lúm, complete with coved ceilings and warm candlelight, which is set to open in late December. Expect to find agave-centric cocktails, such as the Mayan Manhattan and a la brisas del océan, finished with ingredients first prepped by the chefs in the kitchen, like tortilla ash and oyster-stuffed olives.
tán’s menu consists of coastal Mexican fare with rebellious and bold flavors, grounded in fresh seafood and top-notch ingredients, with some sourced straight from Mexico. Standouts include the aguachile tán, a crispy potato-chorizo taco with shrimp and aguachile verde, the red snapper Tikinxic style and the Yucatán pork belly. The restaurant will be open Sunday through Thursday 5PM-10PM and Friday through Saturday 5PM to 11PM.
