It all hits you as soon as you step out of your private ride from Los Cabos International Airport: the delicious Pacific breeze, the clean lines and cool art sculptures in the open-air lobby, the welcome chilled towel and salutatory drink. It’s all about sleek linear vibes at Solaz Resort, which tapped Mexican architectural firm Sordo Madaleno for the 128-room resort’s sustainable design. Tiered terraces and pathways made of quarry stone, granite and marble are flanked by earthy wood accents, indigenous flora and desert vegetation (yep, plenty of prickly cacti)—so there’s no questioning you’re in Baja California. Lines are cleverly blurred between the indoors and out, with guest rooms and public spaces that flow seamlessly onto terraces with sparkling plunge pools and Sea of Cortez vistas so good they’re downright sexy. With only 10 to 15 days of rain each year in Cabo, the Solaz’s indoor-outdoor situation is a welcome luxury.
When you’re not standing transfixed by the resort’s interiors and landscaping (and noticing little pleasures like how sunlight casts the coolest shadows through its many design elements), there’s the hyperlocal art to charm you. Mexican artist César López Negrete spent a year exploring Baja’s land, water, history and folklore before creating unique sculptures and furnishings in thoughtful, sometimes surprising, spots around the property.
While the architecture and art are standouts, it’s ultimately the service that will make you book a return trip ASAP. At check-in, you’ll meet your artisan, a local experience curator, assistant and excursion specialist. Want to swim with whale sharks or just need your bags unpacked? Your artisan is on call 24/7. The resort has three designated clefs d’Or concierges (the creme de la creme of concierges)—more than any other hotel in Los Cabos. You’ll also meet artisans dedicated to a specific craft: There’s Efrain Perez, who lets guests use his personal telescope for stargazing, and then there’s Oscar Ortiz, a Baja history buff who can take you on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to ancient preserved rock paintings in the nearby mountains. You want to do the thing no one else is doing—and your artisan is there to make it happen.
