We love omakase (who doesn’t?) and can’t get enough of speakeasies, which makes Sushi by Boū the ideal sushi restaurant. As much as we love to indulge, omakase’s rigid rules and steep price point can sometimes make the chef’s-choice cuisine unapproachable, which makes simplevenue, the NYC-based hospitality group responsible for Sushi by Boū, all the more appealing thanks to its laidback atmosphere. With a total of 15 locations across simplevenue’s concepts and plans to double its footprint in 2023, simplevenue has cracked the omakase code.
Sushi by Boū and sister brands Sushi Suite, Omakaseed and Fins and Scales boast a presence across New York, New Jersey, Chicago and South Florida, having quickly gained a cult following since launching in 2017. The group truly appeals to all diners, as Fins and Scales offers a timed Kosher omakase experience, and Omakaseed provides a timed plant-based omakase experience.
Founders Michael Sinensky and Erika London and newly appointed partner and chief hospitality officer Richie Romero plan to add at least another dozen locations in 2023, starting with the Hoboken, NJ location slated to open this Saturday, January 14.
Sushi by Boū changed the omakase counter experience by offering a modern take on the old-school sushi counter matched with a speakeasy atmosphere. Each location has a customized theme, ranging from 90s Hip Hop, Roaring '20s, Disco, and Whiskey Library. The Flatiron location draws from the sake dens of Japan for a Tokyo alley theme. Guests enter the restaurant via the secret steps underneath the nail salon Hong Nails & Spa. They then enter the omakase lounge, complete with a 12-seat sushi counter and a sake den-inspired room. Hand-painted murals and decor adorn the space, transporting guests from Manhattan to Japan.
Guests can choose between the 12-course omakase for $60 and the 17-course omakase for $100. Courses include delicacies such as hamachi, hotate, o-toro and unagi, with the signature Wagyuni being an incredible surf and turf course. The talented and experienced sushi chefs serve you directly, guiding you through the meal and providing expertly prepared courses. Handrolls and other sushi favorites using the freshest and highest-quality fish and ingredients sourced locally and globally are available upon request alongside other a la carte specialties. In particular, we recommend mochi ice cream for dessert. Finally, handmade cocktails, imported sake and rare Japanese whiskeys round off the meal.
