The Top Wellness Retreats to Travel for in 2018

By Samantha Yanks | January 16, 2018 | Lifestyle

It’s no longer enough to attend the hottest local fitness class. Staying au courant means booking hardcore global adventure retreats with the exercise leaders you worship!

In mid-October, Instagram feeds filled with images of celebrity trainer Anna Kaiser’s wellness retreat in Ojai, Calif. It’s one thing to pack your calendar with her weekly classes; it’s another—the photos proved—to experience a full-on fitness getaway. Kaiser, who is hosting upcoming trips to Nicaragua, Martha’s Vineyard and Maui, is one of a group of elite exercise gurus—including Gina Bradley, Holly Rilinger, Fred DeVito, Elisabeth Halfpapp, and Taryn Toomey—offering dream excursions to stunning destinations where healthful eating, intensive workout regimens and out-of-the-box adventures abound. Get your planners out: these are the three hottest wellness trips to book right now.

Who: Taryn Toomey, creator of The Class
What: Week-long getaways are held at the Playa Grande Beach Club, located on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic and designed by Celerie Kemble. It sits on a one-mile-long expanse of wild, virgin beach on the Atlantic Ocean against lush, low mountain forests. It is the perfect backdrop for the balance of doing transformational work and settling into deep relaxation.
The Plan: The adventure begins with a fiery two-hour morning session of the wildly popular The Class by Taryn Toomey. Depending on which week you attend, Kevin Courtney or Jaycee Gossett will follow the morning’s practice with restorative yoga in the afternoon. During free hours, opt to take a dip in the lap pool, lie out on the beach, surf the pristine waters, or go on a guided hike or horseback ride on one of the many easily accessible trails. In the late afternoon, savor a cooling restorative yoga class on the lawn overlooking the ocean. Evenings end with family-style meals and bonres on the beach.
When: Jan. 21 to 27 led by Taryn Toomey and Kevin Courtney, Feb. 25 to March 3 led by Taryn Toomey and Jaycee Gossett;

Who: Paddle Diva and Lifted
What: A surf, stand-up paddleboard and adventure expedition with Holly Rilinger and Gina Bradley that combines land and sea experiences on a four-day retreat in Puerto Rico. The magical northwest corner of Rincón is the surfing capital of the Caribbean, surrounded by lush jungles and untouched beaches. Unique to this trip is an optional afternoon of “volun-tourism” when guests can help rebuild areas of Rincón that were damaged by Hurricane Maria.
The Plan: Wake up with the sun and fill your day with stand-up paddling, paddle surfing and surfing on famous surf breaks with Bradley combined with daily Lifted classes led by Rilinger on the deck overlooking the mountains and ocean.
When: April 11 to 16;

Who: Exhale and Lindblad Expeditions
What: Guests escape to Mexico’s Sea of Cortez aboard the National Geographic Sea Bird—a floating base camp for the trip—and explore spectacular, uninhabited pristine islands Espiritu Santo and Isla Partida.
The Plan: Fitness junkies will hike, paddleboard, snorkel with sea lions and more in addition to experiencing Exhale’s award-winning fitness programs, from Core Fusion Boot Camp to Chill Yoga classes.
When: Three-night adventures take place throughout January: Jan. 1 to 4 led by John Nelson, Jan. 4 to 7 led by Fred DeVito and Elisabeth Halfpapp (this will fill up fast!), Jan. 7 to 10 and 10 to 13 led by Chelsea Kruse. Four-night adventures are also offered.;
