“If people don’t make you feel magical, then why interact with them?” asks world renowned multi disciplinary artist David Drebin.
Drebin’s artistic style is often described as epic, dramatic and cinematic — and all that is true about his new project, which he describes as “Public Performance Art at an interactive level.” This isn’t something created for the privileged. Rather, this is an art project that any passersby can not only enjoy — but be an intrinsic part of.
If you are lucky enough to find yourself in Washington Square Park when David pulls out his “FREE READINGS — Who You Really Are” sign, you will witness a growing phenomenon in the making.
“It’s super intense,” Drebin said on social media after the park experience. “Every type of character imaginable. They lined up immediately. And waited and waited…I wasn’t ready (but I was). This was next level — for hours and hours and hours, they would come up one a time, two at a time, three at a time and entire families up to 6!”
“I set out to make a spectacle in this legendary park full of the most incredible characters imaginable. This is an homage to my Mom who was the greatest reader of people and their energy,” Drebin says with deep feeling. “Her gift to me — the ability to understand others deeply.”
Through Drebins’ groundbreaking project, it has become a gift to the City. It’s happening, at random hours, in Washington Square Park, because, as the artist says with passion, “Washington Square Park is a place where ideas collide and sparks fly. You’ve got intellectuals and all sorts of crazies, all gathering around that iconic fountain. It’s soaked in the spirit of rebellion and artistic expression. It’s a haven for the weird, the bold, and the unapologetically authentic…A Magical Place.”
This important piece of performance art, this people based pop up that happens whenever-you-are-lucky-enough-to-catch-him-there is showing us to ourselves — and helping New Yorkers understand that there is magic in every single one of us.
About the Artist: David Drebin is internationally known and has been represented by some of the most prestigious galleries on the planet.
